AEROSPACE COMPETITION (Mechanical)

Entry Fee: Rs 400 (per group. max 5 participant) Contact No.: AVINASH – 8421916519

Date and Time: 7th and 8th feb, 2014 Prize Money:

From 10:30 am 1st: Rs 8000

2nd: Rs 5000

Event Summary:

Design and make a fast, light wireless remote controlled aircraft (using electric motors only), which can manoeuver around one of several possible paths in the least possible time, before landing in the specified zone gathering maximum possible points in the process.

The specifics of the task:

The following order of the task has to be followed:

1. Start from one of the launch zones (I or II).

2. Pass the turning line A.

3. Take a U turn after crossing line A

4. Now, going by the time you have left, make loops around as many poles as possible and score points as assigned to each pole (no more points for more than one loop around a single pole).

5. Enter the safe landing zone and land. Try and land as close as possible to the green spot of the spot landing zone.

6. Complete the whole task in the least time possible choosing judiciously between bonus points accumulated by making loops around the poles and the the points lost by the time incurred in doing that.

Machine Specifications:

1. The use of launching mechanisms is prohibited. The aircraft should be hand launched.

2. The use of IC engines is prohibited. Only electrical motors are allowed.

3. The participants are free to use the materials of their choice.

4. Participants must make all parts of the aircraft themselves. Usage of Ready-to-Fly (RTF) and Almost-Ready-to-Fly (ARF) kits is strictly prohibited

5. Use of ready-made actuators/motors, remote controls and propellers is allowed.

6. Any dimension of the aircraft should not exceed 9000 mm i.e. maximum allowed dimension is 90 cm, whether it be wingspan or the length of the aircraft. Any exception to this rule will render the participant disqualified.

8. PAYLOAD is a dead weight,

(a) which provides no addition to the strength of the wings and fuselage for e.g. steel rods to strengthen the wings are not allowed

(b) which provides no aerodynamic advantage in terms of lift for e.g. placing extra sets of wings to gain more lift is not allowed

(c) Max dimension of the payload should be 30% of the maximum dimension of the plane

(d) Payload should comprise of maximum of two identically shaped discrete bodies.

(e) Payload has to be brought by the teams for the competition. The organizing team is not responsible at any time in the competition for providing the payload.

9. Empty weight of the aircraft is defined as the total weight without the payload. The empty weight of the plane should not exceed 500 grams at any point of time during the competition. The empty weight of the plane would be checked by the coordinator before every run.

13. Anyone found not following the above rules will be disqualified.

Rules & Regulations:

1. The participant will be considered for scoring only if his plane passes the turning line A and makes a U-turn around it. Otherwise, his score stands at zero.

2.The participant will be considered for scoring only if his plane passes the turning line A and makes a U-turn around it. All parts must remain attached to the aircraft during flight and landing manoeuvre, with the exception of the propeller.

3. Broken propellers are allowed, and will not invalidate a flight attempt.

4. The payload must be secured to the airframe to ensure that the payload will not shift or come loose in flight.

Competition rules:

1. The time of flight for a run is defined as the time taken by the aircraft to take the U-turn, make loops around one or more poles, reach the Safe Landing Zone and land there.

2. A maximum time of 4 minutes will be given to complete the circuit.

3. The aircraft has to be hand launched i.e. the aircraft will be launched in the air with hand and no other launch devices.

4. The timer will start from the moment as soon as the aircraft is in the air.

5. The timer will stop only when the aircraft finally comes to a halt.

6. A minimum of 100 grams of payload would have to be carried for the round. The weight of the payload would be decided by the teams for their respective aircraft and should be notified to the coordinator.

7. The teams are expected to fix the payload tightly and should be intact during the course of the

flight.

8. If any part of the payload detaches during the flight, the flight score will be counted according to the payload left with the plane after landing.

9. However, if the payload detaches after landing, it will not be given any penalty.

10. As soon as the timer signals more than 4 minutes, only the points gathered by the aircraft upto that moment are considered. For example, if after taking a U-turn it has made a loop each around Pole A and Pole C and is still in the air when timer stops, it will be considered to have scored 300 points only and no more even if it lands after the allotted 4 minutes.

11. Each team will be given two runs and the better of the two will be considered for the calculation of points.

a) Two chances would be given for each run, only if the plane lands before the Turning Line (A) or fails to launch.

b) If the team thinks that the plane is not functioning properly they can use the second chance only by landing before the Turning Line (A).

c) If the plane crosses the turning line, re-run will not be given

Game play:-

Level 1 : Pick and Drop (Time limit is 7 min)

The arm must pick up objects (sphere, cube, rectangular block, pyramid, cone placed 20 degrees apart) and drop it in cup on other side of table 100 degrees apart in any order in the given time. If time limit is over, points would be given based on objects dropped correctly. Time bonus is included in this level. Range, Accuracy and Speed of arm will be the criteria on which the team is judged.

The final points will be calculated as:

Sphere (5cm diameter) = 7 points

Cube (5cm x 5cm x 5cm) = 2 points

Rectangular block (7cm x 5cm x 3cm) = 3 points

Pyramid (5cm x 5cm x 6cm) = 5 points

Cone (5cm diameter, 6cm height) = 10 points

Time Bonus = Full Minutes left x 2

Points = Time Bonus + Scored points

Top 70% scores will qualify to next level.

Level 2 : Pick and Stack (Time limit 8 min)

The arm must pick up blocks and place them one above another to create a tower like structure in 8 mins. The bottom layers must be formed using rectangular blocks (a maximum of 5 blocks in a single layer). A cone must form the topmost layer.

Each team has 6 minutes to place rectangular blocks and final 2 min will be given to place the final cone irrespective of how much layers are placed. Cone when placed properly will score 5 points.

At any point of time team can decide to place cone and stop playing in case they find there structure may become unstable. No further modification allowed once the cone is placed.

Contestants to be ranked based on time, layers placed, stability and performance (Range, Accuracy, Stability and Speed of arm)

The final points will be calculated as:

Rectangular block (7cm x 5cm x 3cm) = 3 points

Cone (5cm diameter, 6cm height) = 10 points

Time Bonus = Full Minutes left x 2

Points = Time Bonus + Scored points

Level 3: Drop in the Hole(Time limit 10 mins)

The levels test the skill of timing and perfection. Here different objects are placed. You need to pick them and drop them in rotating holes. Different holes have different points.

Sphere(5 cm diameter)=7 points + hole points

Cube(5 cm*5cm*5cm)=2 points+ hole points

Rectangular block(7 cm*5 cm*3cm)=3points+ hole points

Pyramid(5cm*5cm*6cm)=5 points + hole points

Cone(5 cm diameter, 6cm height)= 10 points + accuracy
